Elk Grove Residents Alerted to Water Testing Scam |
Scammers falsely claim water contamination to access homes and personal information |
Residents of Elk Grove are being cautioned about a deceptive scheme involving individuals posing as water quality testers.
These impostors falsely assert that the local water supply is unsafe, aiming to gain entry into homes and extract sensitive personal details.
Bruce Kamilos, General Manager of the Elk Grove Water District, expressed deep concern over these fraudulent activities.
He emphasized that these scammers are exploiting community members by alleging that the water is contaminated and unsafe for consumption or bathing.
They attempt to enter residences under the guise of conducting water tests, seeking personal information such as Social Security numbers.
Similar incidents have been reported in other Northern California areas, including Fairfield in February and Sacramento in April.
The Sacramento Utilities Department continues to monitor these fraudulent activities.
Spokesperson Carlos Eliason noted that there have been recent reports from residents in the South Natomas neighborhood regarding individuals attempting to sell expensive water treatment equipment through deceptive means.
Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to unsolicited home water tests or misleading information about drinking water by calling 3-1-1.
Kamilos reassured the community about the safety and quality of Elk Grove's water supply.
He stated that the water district meets and often exceeds all federal and state standards, ensuring that the water is safe for all uses.
He also clarified that official Elk Grove Water District employees are always in uniform with the district insignia and will only visit properties for water testing upon request.
They do not enter private homes as a standard practice.
The Elk Grove Police Department is aware of these incidents and advises residents to remain vigilant.
They recommend not allowing strangers into your home, verifying the identity of anyone claiming to represent a utility company, and protecting personal information.
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the Elk Grove Police Department at (916) 714-5115.
In related news, the Elk Grove Water District has been proactive in monitoring for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals."
Even before the Environmental Protection Agency announced nationwide limits on PFAS, the district had been diligently testing its water sources.
All seven active wells have been found to be in full compliance with the new standards, underscoring the district's commitment to water quality and public health.
Additionally, the district is offering assistance to low-income households struggling to pay their water bills.
A free sign-up event is scheduled to help residents apply for the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program (LIHWAP), providing one-time support for past due or current water and sewer bills.
Residents interested in applying should bring necessary documentation, including proof of legal status, government-issued photo ID, current water bills, and proof of income.
For more information, residents can visit the Elk Grove Water District's official website.
Community members are encouraged to stay informed and cautious, ensuring their safety and the integrity of their personal information.
By remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities, residents can help protect themselves and their neighbors from these fraudulent schemes. |
