Historic Main Street |
The City is updating the Special Planning Area (SPA) for Historic Main Street Elk Grove (formerly the Old Town SPA), and this is one of the biggest opportunities for residents to influence what our historic core will look and feel like in the years ahead.
To help kick off the update, the City created six “personas” inspired by Main Streets across California andeach representing a different possible direction for the area’s character, design, and experience. You don’t have to choose just one… the final vision could blend several elements that make sense for Elk Grove.
And now the City wants to hear from YOU.
Community Open House – Drop In Anytime
Tuesday, December 9, 2025
5:30 PM – 7:00 PM
Elk Grove Library – 8900 Elk Grove Blvd
Chat with City staff, explore the personas, and share what you love about Historic Main Street and what you’d like to see improved.
If you can’t attend, you can still provide input online through December 10.
The Six Personas at a Glance
These personas are examples of how other historic downtowns operate — and they’ll help shape the discussion around what Elk Grove’s Main Street could become:
Upscale
A more polished, premium downtown with refined dining, high-quality shops, elevated design, and a sophisticated feel.
Relaxed
A comfortable, laid-back, small-town vibe — easy strolling, casual gathering spots, and a welcoming atmosphere that feels “classic Elk Grove.”
Nightlife
A lively evening scene with restaurants, bars, music, and social hangouts that keep Main Street active after dark.
Family-Friendly
Safe, walkable, and community-oriented with kid-friendly amenities, family dining, and public spaces where all ages can enjoy Main Street together.
Historic
A strong focus on preserving and showcasing Elk Grove’s heritage, architecture, and historic identity.
Artsy
Creative and expressive — public art, galleries, local makers, murals, cultural events, and a unique artistic personality.
Why This Matters
Historic Main Street Elk Grove is one of the region’s oldest settlements, home to dozens of buildings from the late 1800s and a nationally recognized Historic District. Updating the SPA now lets us protect that character while guiding thoughtful improvements for the future.
This is your chance to help answer the big question:
What should Historic Main Street feel like?
Should it be more family-focused like Folsom?
Historic like Placerville?
Relaxed like Winters?
Or something uniquely Elk Grove?
Let your voice be heard, this is an important moment for shaping the heart of our community!

Main Street Updates |
You may soon notice crews removing trees along Elk Grove Boulevard between School Street and Waterman Road. This work is being done in preparation for Phase Two of the Old Town Elk Grove Boulevard Streetscape Project, which will improve safety, comfort, and mobility for everyone who travels this corridor.
Crews will be removing select trees to prepare for underground utility lines and future streetscape improvements, including new sidewalks, buffered bike lanes, safer pedestrian crossings and upgraded drainage.
Tree removal work is expected to begin early December and anticipated to be completed in two weeks. Thank you for your patience while we create a safer, more accessible, and more welcoming corridor.
